Forest Road School Spelling Bee was held!

The top six contestants in the Forest Road School Spelling Bee were winner Maaz Rajput, six grade; runner up Marley Polo, fourth grade; finalist Samuel Na, six grade; finalist Sarah Young, fifth grade; finalist Jaden Pryce, fifth grade; finalist Mustafa Hashim, fourth grade.

Maaz correctly spelled the word 'guise' at the 8th round to win the Forest Road School Spelling Bee held at the library on December 19th.

Making and Tinkering are Powerful and Empowering Ways to Learn

MakerSpaces within schools and school libraries provide powerful contexts and opportunities for students to learn and develop new skills.  As the MakerSpace Movement “draws upon the innately human desire to make things using our hands and our brains”, school MakerSpaces can provide this necessary outlet for students, fueling engagement, creativity and curiosity at the same time (Fleming, 2015, p.2). For example, a research study conducted by Small (2014) found that “students who participated in activities involving innovation were inquisitive, imaginative and motivated. They wanted to solve real problems that could help people” (as cited in Moorefield-Lang, 2015, p. 108).

New York State Kids Safe Online Poster Contest

Students are creating posters on Kids Safety Online using Google Drawing.

“Students are growing up in a digital, globally-connected world,” said Deborah Snyder, New York State Chief Information Security Officer. “They spend a significant amount of time online each day, and know how technology is being utilized by their peers. It is refreshing to see their perspective and how they portray the importance of being safe online. This program does more than just build awareness. As we teach students cyber skills, we’re also creating future digital leaders and exposing them to STEAM career opportunities.” “The National Kids Safe Online Poster Contest allows our youth to educate their peers on how to stay safe online. The posters share tips for safe web surfing and the responsible use of social media platforms,” said Thomas Duffy, Chair of the MSISAC, and Center for Internet Security (CIS) Senior Vice President of Operations and Services. The winning posters will be announced in early 2019 and will be featured in the 2020 New York State Kids Safe Online Calendar.
